What to do, when to wait, and when blocked ears are actually caused by earwax.
Many visitors to Bali experience the sensation of water stuck in one ear after swimming in the ocean, hotel pool, or under a waterfall. Most cases resolve within a few hours — but when the blocked feeling persists into the next day, earwax swollen by water contact is almost always the real cause.
Visitors to Bali are exposed to a combination of factors that make ear blockage more common here than in drier or cooler climates:
High ambient humidity: Bali's tropical climate keeps moisture in the air year-round, causing earwax to soften and swell more readily. Wax that would stay manageable at home can block the canal within days of arriving.
Frequent ocean swimming: saltwater repeatedly enters the ear canal during beach sessions at Kuta, Legian, and Canggu, each time pushing pre-existing wax slightly deeper.
Pool chemicals: chlorinated pool water can slightly irritate the ear canal lining, making it more susceptible to wax swelling and retention.
Consecutive surfing days: surfers at Uluwatu, Bingin, or Batu Bolong who surf daily give the ear no recovery time between water exposures.
Post-flight wax: cabin pressure during the flight to Bali compacts borderline earwax further into the canal — swimming in Bali then triggers the swelling that tips it into a full blockage.
Why ears stay blocked — the wax mechanism
Understanding what is actually happening helps clarify why home remedies often fail:
Cerumen absorbs water: earwax is partly composed of water-soluble substances. When water enters the canal, wax absorbs it, swells, and can expand to fully occlude the passage.
Canal skin swells too: repeated water exposure can cause mild swelling of the canal skin itself, further reducing the diameter of an already wax-narrowed passage.
Wax position changes: water entry under pressure — during surfing, snorkeling, or diving — physically moves wax deeper into the canal, closer to the eardrum, where natural migration out is much slower.
Impacted cerumen does not drain: once compacted, earwax will not drain with tilting, jaw movements, or waiting. It requires warm-water irrigation after otoscope confirmation that the eardrum is intact.
Common situations we see in Bali
These are the most frequent scenarios patients describe when they contact us:
Pool swimmer · Seminyak hotel
Swam laps in the hotel pool, ear felt full immediately after. Tilted head, nothing drained. Still blocked next morning. Pool water has swollen pre-existing wax — not water still in the canal.
Snorkeler · Nusa Dua / Gili Islands
Snorkeling session, one ear blocked on resurfacing. Feels underwater 24 hours later. Pressure during snorkeling pushed wax deeper — tilting will not clear it.
Waterfall visitor · Ubud
Swam under a waterfall. One ear cleared by evening — the other is still muffled two days later. The persistent one has compacted earwax; the cleared one was simple trapped water.
Beach swimmer · Kuta / Legian
Waves in the ear during a beach swim. Muffled hearing one side that has not cleared after sleeping. By day two this is almost always earwax, not water.

What to do — and what to avoid
Tilt and wait: Tilt the affected ear toward the ground and gently pull the earlobe downward to straighten the canal. Hold for 30–60 seconds. Jaw movements help.
Hair dryer on low: Hold a hair dryer 30cm away on the lowest heat setting. Warm air encourages evaporation. Do not insert the nozzle near the ear.
Lie on the affected side: Lying on the blocked ear for a few minutes allows gravity to assist drainage. Safe to repeat.
Avoid cotton buds: Nothing inside the canal. Cotton buds remove protective wax, push debris deeper, and raise infection risk.
Seek urgent care if you have: severe ear pain, fever, discharge from the ear, sudden complete hearing loss, or dizziness with vomiting. These may indicate infection rather than simple earwax blockage.

When trapped water becomes an ear infection
Not every blocked ear after swimming is earwax. In some cases — particularly after multiple consecutive days of ocean exposure — the moisture creates conditions for bacterial growth in the ear canal, causing otitis externa (swimmer's ear).
The key distinguishing symptom is pain. Earwax blockage causes muffled hearing and pressure but rarely significant pain. Otitis externa causes ear canal pain that worsens when you touch or pull the outer ear, and may involve discharge or redness at the canal opening.
If your blocked ear is also painful — especially pain that worsens when touching the outer ear — do not assume it is earwax. Irrigation of an infected canal can spread the infection. See a doctor for an examination before any treatment. Read our guide to ear infection after surfing →
Frequently asked questions
Trapped water normally clears within a few hours through jaw movements, tilting, or a hair dryer on low heat from a distance. If the blocked sensation is still present the next morning, earwax swollen by water contact is almost certainly the cause — not lingering water.
If it clears within a few hours, it was water. If muffled hearing or pressure persists beyond 24 hours despite tilting and jaw movements, earwax is the cause. Water causes pre-existing wax to absorb moisture and swell, blocking the canal. An otoscope examination confirms which it is.
No. Cotton buds remove the canal's protective wax layer, can push wax deeper, and may abrade the canal skin — increasing infection risk. For water drainage, tilt the head and use gravity.
