Why Surfers in Canggu Develop Blocked Ears More Often

Canggu's surf environment creates ideal conditions for earwax accumulation — more so than casual beach swimming or hotel pool use:

When to Stop Surfing Temporarily

These symptoms mean the ear needs assessment before the next session:

• ✗Dizziness or balance problems after a session — may indicate inner ear involvement
• ✗Severe muffled hearing that worsens each day — the wax is compacting further with each session

After earwax removal, the doctor advises how long to keep the ear out of the water before returning. For most patients, 24 hours is sufficient. For those with signs of irritation or infection, longer rest is needed.

Can Surfer's Ear (Exostosis) Become Permanent?

Yes — exostosis is cumulative and irreversible without surgery. The bony growths in the ear canal develop gradually over years of repeated water and wind exposure at breaks like Batu Bolong, Old Man's, and Echo Beach.

For surfers in the early stages, the narrowing is minor and barely noticeable — wax just builds up slightly faster than before. In later stages, the canal may be narrow enough that wax cannot clear at all between sessions, and professional cleaning every 6–8 weeks becomes necessary.
