Common tests for men
Chlamydia & Gonorrhoea (NAAT)
First-catch urine or urethral swab; throat/rectal swabs if exposure suggests. High sensitivity; results in 24–72 hours.
HIV — Rapid / ELISA / PCR
Options depend on exposure timing — rapid for immediate screening, ELISA for routine screening, PCR for early detection.
Syphilis (VDRL & TPHA)
Screening and confirmatory serology — usually detectable 3–6 weeks after exposure.
Other tests
Hepatitis B/C serology, herpes serology when clinically indicated, and specialized STI panels.
When to test
Timing depends on the infection — NAAT for bacterial STIs typically reliable 1–2 weeks after exposure; HIV RNA (PCR) can detect earlier (7–10 days), while ELISA/4th-gen tests are reliable from ~3–4 weeks. If exposure is recent, get a baseline test and follow-up as advised.
Sample types & comfort
For urethral infections, a first-catch urine sample is often sufficient and non-invasive. Urethral swabs may be performed if symptoms present. Throat/rectal swabs are used when exposure indicates. Our clinicians use fast, minimally invasive techniques — male staff available on request.
Tip: avoid urinating 1 hour before a urine NAAT for best accuracy.
