Syphilis (VDRL & TPHA)

When to test
Timing depends on the infection — NAAT for bacterial STIs typically reliable 1–2 weeks after exposure; HIV RNA (PCR) can detect earlier (7–10 days), while ELISA/4th-gen tests are reliable from ~3–4 weeks. If exposure is recent, get a baseline test and follow-up as advised.
Sample types & comfort
For urethral infections, a first-catch urine sample is often sufficient and non-invasive. Urethral swabs may be performed if symptoms present. Throat/rectal swabs are used when exposure indicates. Our clinicians use fast, minimally invasive techniques — male staff available on request.
Tip: avoid urinating 1 hour before a urine NAAT for best accuracy.

Gonorrhea often causes symptoms within 2–7 days, while chlamydia and Mycoplasma genitalium are frequently silent. A negative feeling is not a negative test.
Why Site-Specific Swabs Matter
A urine test only checks the urethra. Gonorrhea and chlamydia in the throat or rectum are common after oral or anal sex and are missed by urine alone. Tell the doctor what type of contact you had — this is confidential and simply helps choose the right samples. Men who have sex with men are generally advised to test at all three sites (urine, throat and rectum).
After a Positive Result
- Most bacterial STIs are cured with antibiotics, sometimes as a single dose or injection.
- Avoid sex for 7 days after finishing treatment and until partners have also been treated.
- Recent partners should be told and tested — the doctor can advise on how.
- A repeat test about 3 months later is recommended because reinfection is common.
HIV Prevention: PEP and PrEP
PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a 28-day course of HIV medicines that must start within 72 hours of exposure — the sooner the better. PrEP is taken before exposure by people at ongoing risk. If you had a high-risk exposure in the last three days, contact a doctor straight away rather than waiting to test.
