STD Symptoms vs No Symptoms — When to Test (Bali)

Updated: Nov 07, 2025 • Confidential clinic & villa testing available

Quick takeaway

Many sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be asymptomatic. If you've had a potential exposure, don't rely on symptoms — testing is the only way to know. Below: common symptoms to watch for, infections that are often silent, testing timelines and practical next steps in Bali.

Symptoms vs no symptoms — what to watch for

Common symptoms that warrant immediate testing

  • Unusual genital discharge (male or female)
  • Pain or burning on urination
  • Genital ulcers, sores, or lumps
  • Lower abdominal pain or fever
  • Sore throat after unprotected oral sex
  • Unexplained rashes, swollen glands

Infections commonly without symptoms

  • Chlamydia — often silent, especially in women
  • HPV — usually asymptomatic until warts or screening changes
  • Some gonorrhoea cases — can be mild or silent
  • Early HIV — may cause flu-like illness or be asymptomatic
  • Syphilis — primary sore can be painless and missed

If you notice any symptoms, contact us immediately for triage — some infections need urgent treatment.

When to test after exposure — practical timeline

Immediate (within 72 hours)

If exposure was within 72 hours, contact clinician immediately to discuss PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis for HIV) and baseline testing.

PEP must be started as soon as possible — do not delay.

First tests (1–2 weeks)

NAAT (CT/NG) — chlamydia & gonorrhoea often detectable 1–2 weeks after exposure. Consider early HIV RNA (PCR) if very recent high-risk exposure.

Screening (3–4 weeks)

4th-generation HIV tests (antigen+antibody) become reliable around 3–4 weeks. Syphilis serology often becomes positive 3–6 weeks after infection.

Full reassurance (12 weeks)

For full HIV reassurance per many guidelines, final testing at 12 weeks may be advised depending on the test used and exposure type. Your clinician will recommend the right schedule.

Tip: If in doubt, get a baseline test now and repeat at recommended intervals. Combining tests (NAAT + 4th-gen/HIV PCR where appropriate) increases early detection.

Testing options we offer (Bali)
