For chlamydia and gonorrhea, a vaginal swab — which you can take yourself in private after a short explanation — is the most sensitive sample for women and is preferred over urine. Throat and rectal swabs are added when there has been oral or anal exposure, because infections at those sites can be missed by a vaginal swab alone. HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B are checked with a blood sample.
Symptoms That Should Prompt Testing
- Unusual vaginal discharge, odor or itching
- Pain or burning when passing urine
- Bleeding after sex or between periods
- Lower abdominal or pelvic pain, or pain during sex
- Sores, blisters or lumps in the genital area
Many STIs in women cause no symptoms at all — especially chlamydia. Untreated, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and fertility problems, so testing after a new partner or unprotected sex is worthwhile even if you feel well.
Not Every Discharge Is an STI
Thrush (candida) and bacterial vaginosis are very common in hot, humid climates like Bali, after antibiotics, or with tight swimwear. They are not sexually transmitted infections, but they can look similar. A doctor can examine you and test for both STIs and these common conditions so you get the right treatment.
Testing in Pregnancy or If You Might Be Pregnant
Tell the doctor if you are pregnant or your period is late. Some infections and treatments need special care in pregnancy, and a pregnancy test can be done at the same visit. Emergency contraception is most effective the sooner it is taken after unprotected sex.
