Canggu has a significant stray dog population, particularly near rice fields, beaches, and residential alleys.
Morning runs and walks along Canggu rice field paths are commonly associated with dog encounters. Stray dogs are frequently reported on unpaved paths near Pererenan and Berawa, where they may be territorial.
Beach dogs near Batu Bolong and Echo Beach are a frequently reported exposure source. Dogs near food stalls and warungs can be unpredictable, especially at night.
Dogs kept outside villas and roaming alleys (gang) in residential Canggu areas. Unfamiliar visitors can trigger defensive biting. Cat scratches in villa gardens also warrant medical assessment.
WHO classifies animal exposures into three categories. Doctor determines category on-site after wound examination.
Category I — No vaccine required
Touching or feeding animals. Licking on intact skin. No skin contact with saliva. Action: wash hands, no vaccine needed.
Category II — Vaccine required
Minor scratches or abrasions without bleeding. Nibbling of uncovered skin. Action: wash wound, start vaccine on Day 0. No RIG needed.
Category III — Vaccine + RIG required
Single or multiple deep bite wounds. Scratches with bleeding. Saliva on mucous membranes. Bat contact. Bites to head, face, neck, hand, or genital area. Action: wash wound, vaccine + RIG on Day 0. Most urgent category.
Schedule depends on prior vaccination status. Doctor confirms which applies after reviewing your vaccination history.

While less common than in Ubud, monkeys are occasionally encountered in Canggu — particularly near temple areas and villa gardens bordering forested zones.
Any monkey bite or scratch that breaks the skin requires medical assessment — the same protocol applies as for dog bites.
