Common Rabies Exposures in Ubud

Ubud has the highest monkey exposure rate in Bali. Monkey bites are among the most distinctive risks compared to other Bali areas.

🐒

Ubud Monkey Forest

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary (Mandala Suci Wenara Wana) is frequently cited as one of the highest-risk sites for monkey bite incidents in Bali. Feeding, carrying food, or walking near feeding areas increases risk significantly. Any bite or bleeding scratch is Category II–III exposure.

🛕

Temple Monkeys

Macaques at Goa Gajah, Pura Tirta Empul, Pura Gunung Kawi, and Pura Kehen are territorial and unpredictable. They frequently grab items from tourists and bite when provoked. Same assessment protocol applies as Monkey Forest.

🌿

Jungle Treks & Villa Dogs

Dogs on jungle trekking paths around Campuhan Ridge Walk, Tegalalang rice terraces, and Ayung River gorge. Jungle retreat villas may also have resident dogs that bite unfamiliar visitors.

Do You Need Vaccine? Exposure Categories

WHO classifies animal exposures into three categories. Doctor determines category on-site after wound examination.

I

Category I — No vaccine required

Touching or feeding animals. Licking on intact skin. Action: wash hands, no vaccine needed.

II

Category II — Vaccine required

Minor scratches or abrasions without bleeding. Nibbling of uncovered skin. Action: wash wound, start vaccine Day 0. No RIG needed.

III

Category III — Vaccine + RIG required

Deep bites. Scratches with bleeding. Bites to hand, face, head. Bat contact. Action: vaccine + RIG on Day 0. Most urgent.

Monkey bites at Monkey Forest are frequently Category III — hands and fingers are the most common bite sites. Do not delay PEP assessment.

Can I Wait Until Tomorrow After a Monkey or Dog Bite in Ubud?

A very common question — especially after a monkey bite at Monkey Forest when clinics seem far away. The short answer: do not panic, but do not delay.

✅ What to do right now (before doctor arrives):

  • • Wash the wound with soap and running water — 10–15 minutes
  • • Apply iodine or antiseptic if available
  • • Stay calm — thorough wound washing significantly reduces viral load
  • • WhatsApp us to arrange same-day assessment

❌ What you should not do:

  • • Do not wait to see if symptoms develop — by the time rabies symptoms appear, the virus has already reached the brain
  • • Do not assume the monkey was healthy because it appeared normal
  • • Do not close or suture the wound tightly before medical assessment
  • • Do not delay starting PEP past Day 0 if indicated

Per WHO guidelines, rabies PEP is most effective when started on Day 0. If the bite happened late at night, WhatsApp us — we accommodate after-hours requests where possible, or schedule a priority morning appointment. Doctor travels to your Ubud villa — no need to navigate unfamiliar roads in the dark.
