Uluwatu has two distinct exposure risks — temple monkeys and cliff path dogs — both frequently reported by tourists and surfers in the area.
The macaque population at Pura Luhur Uluwatu is well-established and frequently reported as a bite risk. Monkeys are known to snatch sunglasses, phones, and food — and may bite or scratch when provoked or when visitors carry items. Sunset viewing sessions when the temple is crowded carry heightened exposure risk.
Stray dogs are commonly encountered on the steep cliff paths leading to Bingin Beach, Padang Padang, Impossibles, and Balangan. Morning surfer walks down cliff stairs are a frequently reported exposure setting. Dogs may be territorial around local warungs and accommodation at cliff base.
