The most important thing to understand about STD testing timing: testing too early gives a false negative, not because the test failed, but because there is not yet enough virus or bacteria in the body to detect. Each infection has a different window period — the minimum time after exposure before a test can reliably detect it.
For most STIs, 3–7 days is too early for HIV but sufficient for Gonorrhea/Chlamydia PCR. For HIV, the window period depends on which test is used. Below is the realistic timeline for each.

Yes — and this is the most important thing to understand. A rapid HIV antibody test done within the first 2 weeks after exposure will almost certainly return negative, even if infection occurred. This is not a reliable result — it is simply too early. The 4th generation HIV test (antigen + antibody) is reliable from 18–45 days. HIV RNA PCR can detect infection from around day 10 but is used for high-risk exposures, not routine screening. Always tell the doctor when exposure occurred so the right test and timing is chosen.
Yes — and this is extremely common. Chlamydia has no symptoms in approximately 70–80% of women and 50% of men. Gonorrhea is asymptomatic in about 50% of women. Herpes has no visible sores during initial infection in the majority of cases. HIV often causes no distinguishing symptoms in the acute phase. This is why waiting for symptoms is not a reliable strategy — it results in delayed diagnosis, ongoing transmission, and untreated complications.
